Interview: How to Approach
There are a lot of rounds in the recruitment process in the States. While in Europe there are often about three stages, in the USA there are five to seven stages.
To save time, the first rounds are conducted by phone or videoconference, no one forces the candidate to come to the office. At the same time, the first interviews are very short: 15-30 minutes, no more. The purpose of the first interview is to screen, to check how basic you meet the requirements of the vacancy.
Even grocery (non-recruiting) interviews sometimes only last half an hour. Indeed, a lot can be learned in 30 minutes if the employer prioritizes the questions. Americans are used to short interviews, they are very clear.
Predictability
Another difference is that in the United States, all questions are predictable. The main thing is to prepare well for them. These questions are well known, and many books have been written about them. For example:
“Cracking the PM Interview”.
“The Product Manager Interview: 164 Actual Questions and Answers”.
“Decode and Conquer”.
The main group is behavioral questions about experience. For example:
How did you resolve the conflict at work.
How the team was motivated.
What are your advantages and disadvantages.
Everyone has such questions, so you just need to prepare well-structured answers.
