About Feedback

2020-12-29 by Desmond

Feedback is rarely given in the States. Sometimes they send a standard skip: “You are super, but we have stronger candidates.” And you will not find fault. If you ask direct questions: “Is it possible to be more specific about what I am not good enough at?”, Then they simply will not answer you, and that’s it. You may simply not like the interviewer, in the States everything is wildly subjective – it’s a lottery. Although in Russia I faced the same thing.

However, in the United States, large companies try to avoid subjectivity, so the interviewers do not talk to each other. They are so professional that they will smile to the last. As a result, you will leave them happy and then write a good review.

After the interview, you will receive a special form in which you will be asked: “How did the interview go, how do you assess the interviewer, was everything clear and comfortable?” But then they can safely refuse. And that’s a problem – you play blind.

Not so in small companies. Sometimes the interviewer directly during the interview writes feedback about you to colleagues – this is obvious and unpleasant.

Know your career goals

First, identify what type of career you want. This is particularly important for people entering the workforce for the first time or changing careers. Get recommendations from family, professors, a career coach or former coworkers. Make sure you have a clear and realistic goal, determine how you plan to reach it and note what qualifies you for that career path.
